Sustainability and Environmental Management
What is Sustainability?
Everything that we need for our general well-being and basic survival depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment.
The Potential for the Long-term Maintenance of Human Well-being is Three Dimensional
There are two major ways of reducing negative human impact and enhancing ecosystem services (such as clean water, food and disease control), the first is environmental resource management. This approach is to engage in an activity with the goal to maintain and improve the state of an environmental resource affected by human activities, in our case it’s through the recycling of electronics. For example, recycling 1 million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,675 U.S. homes in one year.
The second approach is management of human consumption of resources, which is based largely on information gained from economics. There are many factors that tie into this equation some of which include; supply and demand, equipment manufacturing and life cycle, as well as consumer spending, income and debt.
Sustainability through responsible electronics recycling helps to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, with the ultimate goal of fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations. This is important in making sure that we have and will continue to have ecosystem services and resources necessary to protect human health and our environment.
What is RAE Doing?
RAE is committed to protecting human health and the environment, by promoting and providing environmentally responsible recycling solutions of the highest standards. These standards include:
Zero Electronic Waste Landfilled
Committed to making every reasonable effort to prevent electronic waste from entering landfills, dumps or waste incinerators
Maximum Recovery
Through manual de-manufacturing and separation, recover usable parts and materials prior to final refining and recovery
NO Export of Electronic Waste
Electronic waste is not shipped for processing to developing countries (non OECD)

Certifications and Standards
RAE – IT Asset Management’s Certifications and Standards Portfolio includes the following:
R2:2013 (Responsible Recycling) Certified
R2 requires recyclers to manage materials properly to protect the environment, human health and safety, and prohibits illegal export of hazardous materials. This verified process demonstrates to customers that all electronics are being recycled with the highest standards for data privacy, environmental controls, employee health and safety as well as corporate social responsibility. This standard is supported by government, manufacturer, recycler and non-governmental organization stakeholders.
ISO 14001:2015 Certified
ISO 14001:2015 is an environmental management standard that defines a set of requirements for environmental management systems. The purpose of this standard is to help organizations minimize how their operations (processes etc.) negatively affect the environment (i.e. cause adverse changes to air, water, or land); comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements as well as continually improve upon these standards and efficiencies.
ISO 45001:2018 Certified
ISO 45001:2018 is an International Standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, with guidance for its use, to enable an organization to proactively improve its OH&S performance in preventing injury and ill-health.
Florida DEP Registered
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is the lead agency for environmental management and stewardship and is one of the more diverse agencies in state government – protecting our air, water and land.
HIPAA Awareness Trained
Compliant with the HIPAA Rules’ requirements to protect the privacy and security of electronic protected health information including proper disposal.
EHSMS Policies & Procedures Implemented
A process that integrates the planning, development and implementation of environmental, health and safety policies, procedures and programs in all facets of our electronics recycling process.
